HELIOS Project results presented in Bologna

Maps Energy’s contribution to the HELIOS Project

The results of the HELIOS – Holistic Energy-efficient Living and Integrated Optimization System project, funded by the Next Generation EU programme of the European Union and supported through the BI-REX Competence Centre for technological innovation, in collaboration with the Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna, were officially presented in Bologna at the BI-REX headquarters.

At the heart of the HELIOS project, which began in 2023, lies the creation of a next-generation Digital Twin: a dynamic and living digital model of a constructed building, capable of evolving over time by updating in real-time thanks to integration with IoT sensors, monitoring systems, and environmental data. Unlike traditional BIM management, HELIOS offers a real-time, interoperable vision that is integrated with the urban and energy ecosystem, enabling a more efficient and sustainable management of the entire building stock.

During the presentation, Matteo Gerola, Developer Manager at Maps Energy, illustrated Maps Group’s contribution to the research project. He explained how, by modelling the rooms of the building and training Artificial Intelligence models (GAM and CNN), it is possible to predict the future behaviour of the building’s energy and environmental parameters.

This system enables informed decisions – both manual and automated – to optimise plant operations, reduce energy costs, and enhance occupant comfort.

The project includes activities in industrial research and experimental development, in full compliance with the GBER Regulation (Art. 25) and the PNRR Convention signed by BI-REX with the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy. All actions are aimed at delivering tangible and transferable outcomes, supporting the adoption of smart solutions in the facility management sector, and contributing to the development of a more sustainable and resilient building model.
