Parmenides Project

PARMENIDES (Participatory Resilience for Management of Hybrid Energy Storage) is a three-year European research project involving a multidisciplinary consortium of eight partners, including research institutes, technology companies and organisations from Europe and Switzerland. The project aims to revolutionise the management of hybrid energy storage systems and contribute to a more resilient, sustainable and participatory energy transition.

Hybrid systems for more flexible energy

With the increase in renewable energy sources, the need for efficient storage solutions that can balance fluctuations and harmonise supply and demand is also increasing. PARMENIDES is focusing precisely on this aspect and is working on hybrid storage systems that integrate various technologies, such as:

  • Hydrogen batteries;
  • Pumped storage systems with hydropower;
  • Other innovative energy storage models.

The aim is to develop advanced management strategies for these complex systems to make them more efficient and adaptable in practise.

Secure, interoperable and participatory digital architecture

The key element of the project is the definition and implementation of a digital communication and control architecture designed to be

  • Interoperable to connect different devices and technologies
  • Reliable, to ensure the continuity of services even in decentralised contexts.
  • Secure, thanks to the integration of advanced cybersecurity mechanisms
  • Participatory, i.e. designed to encourage the involvement of stakeholders (citizens, operators, local authorities) in energy management.

This infrastructure is tested in real scenarios to validate its robustness, effectiveness and replicability.

A contribution to the resilience of europe’s energy supply

Through an integrated approach combining technology, sustainability and integration, PARMENIDES aims to:

  • Strengthen the resilience of energy networks;
  • Reduce the environmental impact by optimising the use of resources;
  • Promote new models of active citizen participation in the energy market;
  • Promote the scalability of digital solutions in local and supranational energy systems.

PARMENIDES is a decisive step towards a flexible, decentralised and low-emission European energy system that is in line with the objectives of the Green Deal and the directives on the digitalization of the energy sector.

Two pilot projects in strategic european contexts

To ensure concrete and measurable results, PARMENIDES plans to test its solutions in two pilot projects:

  • Austria: focus on energy communities in which citizens and local actors are actively involved in the generation, storage and joint management of energy.
  • Sweden: complementary scenario to test the architecture in a different technological and legal context to verify the flexibility and adaptability of the system.

These use cases will make it possible to address different challenges – legal, climatic and infrastructural – and demonstrate the applicability of the PARMENIDES model across Europe.
