Renewable Energy Communities have been the talk for years now but, in Italy, their adoption was limited by legislative delays.
Finally, thanks to the Decreto Mille Proroghe (so-called “Thousand-extension” Decree-Law) we will be able to exploit the potential of this new tool for the fight against climate change in Italy too.
This and much more was discussed during the presentation of Electricity Market Report organised by Energy & Strategy where Paolo Gangemi – Product Manager of ROSE Intelligent Energy Management – spoke to explain the importance of data in the management and development of renewable energy communities and virtual aggregates.

What are the most stimulating elements of renewable energy communities?
First of all, it is necessary to define Renewable Energy Communities (RECs).
Energy communities are: “Associations between citizens or companies that join forces to equip themselves with plants to produce and share renewable energy.”
In Italy, the partial transposition of the (RED II) European directives defines energy communities mainly as own consumption subjects, thus enhancing the incentive based on energy virtually self-consumed by the community.
This interpretation of the legislation highlights the need to intelligently manage the balance between the communities’ production and consumption. Therefore, with the current scenario, data-driven platforms and storage systems will be fundamental to optimise the economic benefits of the community.
However, energy communities are not just self-consumption. Indeed, RECs (“Renewable Energy Communities”) and CECs (“Citizen Energy Communities”) will be a source of huge environmental, economic and social benefits.
In particular, we are convinced that renewable energy communities can be the main key of our Country’s decarbonisation path. A shared and inclusive path which enhances the cooperation between companies, citizens and PA, maximising the economic impact.
What will be the role of data?
The use of data will be fundamental in redefining the business models of the energy market. For example, by introducing the “Renewable Energy Communities”, the adoption of technologies and skills for data processing will grow exponentially.
Therefore, at MAPS we want to bring our expertise to the SMART use of data, with a focus on the electricity market. To do this, we have created the ROSE Intelligent Energy Management System which fully meets this market’s need for digital transformation.
In fact, thanks to ROSE, companies will be able to manage their resources in real time with predictive Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence models.
What are the main innovations you are involved in?
Thanks to our EMS platform, developed and tested in the Living Lab of the Savona Campus of the University of Genoa, we have the opportunity to extend our ability to create knowledge from the data.
Specifically, the solution allows us to integrate the Engagement of users already in the creation phase of the community and then to optimise their Performance up to enabling their participation in the Flexibility market.
In other words, ROSE will combine citizen behaviour, consumption data and interests in order to personalise suggestions and incentives. The suggestions will be useful to citizens to adopt virtuous behaviours.
Similarly, companies will be helped to optimise economic balance and incentives. The process will be guided by the Energy Performance Index which will combine variables processed by algorithms on Real-Time data in order to assess, predict and stimulate the virtuosity of subscribers.
Thanks to this integration, ROSE will allow not only to simulate and manage communities but to personalise and make intuitive the value of participating.
From renewable energy communities to virtual aggregates, how do data help us handle the flexibility market?
The goal is to replace the old centralised system, based on fossil fuels, with a distributed model in which citizens become prosumers. The numbers that stem dell’Electricity Market Report highlight the need to increase the energy produced from renewable sources in order to meet the objectives of the PNIEC and to reduce CO2 emissions.
