Ultra-fast public charging infrastructure and integrated urban flexibility management to turn public charging, residential resources and data centres into active resources for the electricity grid

The FÌERI project — Flexibility for Energy Infrastructure through Smart Charging — aims to demonstrate, at urban scale and under real-world operating conditions, how an integrated flexibility management ecosystem can securely, scalably and interoperably orchestrate ultra-high-power public charging (HPC), residential resources and Data Processing Centres (DPCs), transforming charging infrastructure from a passive load into an active resource for the national and European electricity system.

The initiative is built around four technological pillars: an ultra-fast HPC infrastructure based on a central cabinet and remote dispenser architecture, dynamic power sharing and a Medium Voltage interface, compliant with ISO 15118-20, OCPP 2.1 and OCPI 2.2.1; the Chain2gate4DigitalGrid system as a Grid-Edge Intelligence platform for multi-asset urban flexibility; a European-grade BSP/RO cloud platform with a Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework and integration with flexibility markets; and advanced forecasting models for HPC and DPCs. Together, these components enable the “Smart City Balance” model in Italy for the first time.

Maps S.p.A. technologies for the FÌERI project

Within the project partnership, Maps S.p.A. contributes its expertise in software development and artificial intelligence for the Energy sector. Through FÌERI, the company brings its BSP/RO platform to a European level of maturity, evolving it into a solution capable of orchestrating heterogeneous resources — HPC, DPCs and residential assets — and interfacing with the leading European flexibility marketplaces.

The specific role of Maps S.p.A.

  • BSP/RO Cloud Platform and MPC Framework: Evolution of the BSP/RO cloud platform towards a Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework for real-time online optimisation, with continuous set-point updates and integration of continuous intraday trading and imbalance management, moving beyond offline scheduling approaches.
  • Forecasting Models for HPC and DPCs and What-if Scenarios: Development of forecasting models dedicated to HPC stations and Data Processing Centres, including uncertainty estimation, alongside a What-if module for simulating alternative flexibility activation scenarios.
  • Semantic Interoperability and European Flexibility Markets: Extension of the CIM v2.0 semantic model to data centres and HPC, together with native integration with the European Piclo Flex marketplace, serving as a testbed for generalising the model to continental markets, with readiness for NODES and GOPACS.
  • Data Trustworthiness System — DTS: Development of a system to verify the quality and reliability of energy data exchanged across the flexibility value chain, based on the principles of Data Quality and Cyber-resilience.
  • Operational Testing — MindFlex and the European Dimension: Validation of the extended platform within the MindFlex pilot project.

The other FÌERI partners

  • Dazetechnology srl — Daze: As project lead, Daze evolves from AC/DC charging towards the development of a new-concept ultra-fast HPC system, based on a central cabinet and remote dispenser architecture, dynamic power sharing across satellites, a Medium Voltage interface, native compliance with ISO 15118-20, OCPP 2.1 and OCPI 2.2.1, cybersecurity by design in line with NIS2 and CRA requirements, and a dedicated mobile app.
  • MAC srl: MAC evolves its system from “Chain2gate4Flexibility” to “Chain2gate4DigitalGrid”, transforming the CIR from a charging controller into a Grid-Edge Intelligence platform for multi-asset urban flexibility. The system includes new Edge AI, CSC — Charging Station Controller — CER and DPC modules, CEI PAS 57-127 and OCPI 2.2.1 interfaces, and NIS2/CRA cybersecurity.
  • Politecnico di Milano — POLIMI: As research organisation, Politecnico di Milano is responsible for developing the MPC framework for real-time control of heterogeneous resources, modelling flexibility from DPCs and HPC, analysing the European state of the art in flexibility and urban grid development scenarios for 2030–2040, with experimental validation at the Città Studi campus.
